Charlotte Doyle vs. Captain Andrew Jaggery

1. Describe an event from your novel that shows the protagonist (the leading character, hero, or heroine of a literary work) versus the antagonist (a person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another; opponent) element.

The event in The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle that shows the protagonist vs. the antagonist is in chapter 11. It is the part after Charlotte tells the captain her discoveries about the round robin, the stowaway, the pistol and the rebellion-when the captain calls the crew over and then shoots  Mr. Cranick and then whips Zachariah until he dies. Charlotte was friends with Zachariah and didn't like the way the captain treated the crew and so she gets the whip from Mr. Hollybrass and whips the captains face and there is a big gauge and then it starts bleeding.

Let me describe with more detail. Charlotte was told to tell the captain if she ever saw a round robin to tell him immediately and he told her that guns were not aloud on the ship too. Charlotte sees both of them and decides to tell the captain about it. The captain is furious and calls out the crew, along with the crew is a stowaway named Mr. Cranick. The captain hates Cranick and Cranick says something that makes the captain mad and so the captain shoots him and he dies. Then Zachariah says that they should say a prayer for him but the captain doesn't approve and he knows that he is the oldest and the weakest and so he says that Zachariah needs 50 "lashings". They are whipping him and Charlotte can't bare it so she flings herself at Mr. Hollybrass and gets the whip. Then the captain orders her to give it to him but she flicks her wrist and then it hits the captain and he is know full of hatred for Charlotte.

So the protagonist is Charlotte and the antagonist is the captain. And the "fight" between them is that the captain is being very cruel-not to her- but to her friends and she is ordered to stay and watch them be tortured. And she just can't bare to see what is happening to her friends and so she has to stop the captain and so she gets the whip and then she whips the captain's face and then he hates her. That is the event between Charlotte and the captain (the protagonist and antagonist).

SO MUCH CONFLICT!

1. What is the conflict of your Literature Circle Novel? How do you know this? How do you think it is going to be resolved?
The conflict so far in my book,(The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle) is around the part when the second porter runs away. The conflict is that one of her escort families has a very sick child and the other family will not make it in time for the ride for whatever reason. Because of this problem, Charlotte will have to decide if she is going to go on the ship, with no one else that she knows, of stay and figure it out. But, she has to keep in mind that; it is not proper for a lady like her to go on a trip like this unescorted, it is a very long boat ride and she will be alone, and she will have to figure everything out herself because there is no one to help her. I know this because it is one of the only big events in the story so far. And I think she is just going to tell herself that everything will work out fine and then get on the ship.

2. What is one conflict you recently faced in your life? How did you overcome it?
A conflict that I had and have to very soon have to face is moving. Last year AND this year, we moved and are going to move in the middle of the year. It is really hard to move in the middle of the year because everyone already are settled in with friends and some people might not be willing to open up and let you join in, its hard to get used to how the school goes because everyone already knows about it very well and then they have to explain to you and everyone did all these projects and you don't know what they are talking about when they discuss it and everything and it is also really hard especially with older siblings.

3. Why is conflict important in life? What role does it play in our lives?
Conflicts give us experience. In life, experience is a very important to us so we can learn from our experiences (and mistakes) so you can see that conflict is quite important. Conflict builds us up. If we didn't have conflict and then suddenly one day conflict hits us in the face and we never experienced it before, imagine what we would do! We might do something desperate or we would just die from either stress or something. So it is important to be builded up by conflicts in our lives so when conflict pops up, we will have experience enough to have some sort of idea of what to do to resolve the conflict.

The development of Malaysia

1. What role did geographic location and natural resources play in the the development of Malaysia?

Well, the location of Malaysia could have helped in the development because it is in a tropical sort of area, and  people who live in deserts, different sort of places or far away might not have experienced a tropical sort of place because of where they live. So the might want to come and visit. This could have helped because the travelers would spend money here and some of the money was used to buy "cargo" as the New Guineans would say, from other places in the world so that they could build up Malaysia. That is one possible way the location of Malaysia could have helped in the development of Malaysia.

Another possibility why the location of Malaysia could have helped in the development is because it is a peninsula so most of its sides are touching water. This could have helped in the development because of what is in that water. There are fish and other species that they could export to other countries for money and then the money would go to building up Malaysia.

Malaysia is very known for the tin. Malaysia had loads of tin a while ago and the would put people to work to get it. Then they would make decorations, cups, and all sorts of things with the tin. Then they would export it to other countries and/or travelers and locals would buy the products. After a while they made these giant machine/boats that would mine the tin for them, and it was very helpful to the people because they didn't have to do as much work. Then the money would go to building up Malaysia.

Another natural resource that Malaysia has that could have helped in the development of Malaysia is the tea plantations. In Malaysia there are large tea plantations and you know that lots of people drink tea, so the people sell the tea to other places and many people would buy the tea and the money might have gone into helping build up Malaysia.

Another natural recourse is palm oil. Malaysia is the second-largest palm oil producer in the world. Palm oil is used in all sorts of things like some food products; shortening, imitation dairy products, margarine and spreads, frying/cooking oils and fats, filled milk, cream fillings, spray oils, and ice cream powder. Other non-food uses are soaps, shampoo, and many other things. So because there are so many day-to-day items that have palm oil in them that the people gain lots of money, and that money would go into helping buy cargo or whatever that the people needed to help build Malaysia.

So in conclusion, there turned out to be a lot of reasons that the location of Malaysia helped with the development and there are many natural resources that could have helped get money to buy cargo and things to build up Malaysia; like because Malaysia is a tropical place, because of the food it has, because of the tin, tea plantations, and last but not least palm oil.

Learning Profile

Today's blogpost is a reflection on Learning Profiles, and now that you have a better understanding of your profile we would like you to write and share the information with the class. You may need to review the vocabulary list for definitions.

Using the profile information (The Dominance Factor booklet, and profile sheet) as a guide, in a well structured response, please reflect upon and answer the following ....

1. I learn best when I focus on the details of something, when I brainstorm because it helps get ideas, when I practice saying things in new ways, talking slower with fewer words helps people understand me, when I get physically active, especially with highly integrative, non-competitive activities so I don’t fall asleep. I do good work by analysis, verbalization/discussing it and writing about whatever we are doing. I am able to easily follow step-by-step instructions.

2. I need to write poems and songs that do not rhyme as much as possible, brainstorm, pay more attention to my gut instincts because they will help me along. I also need to be aware of my emotions and express them to other people so they know how I feel, use metaphors and emotional stories a lot. I need to learn to be comfortable with ambiguity and paradox because it will help me cross the bridge to the gestalt side and I also need to role-play business and personal situations to understand the main idea.

3. The strategies that would help me in my learning are to write poems and songs with rich images and don’t rhyme as much as possible to help improve my brain, brainstorming would also help, being aware of my emotions and expressing them so others know how I feel, pay attention to my gut instincts, and playing with impressionistic and free-form color painting, sculpture and dance to also improve my brain.

4. I would like my teachers to know this about me I can still learn and take in details even when I am under stress, it is hard but I can do it. I also would like my teachers to know that I need to be physically active especially with highly integrative, non-competitive activities or else I will probably think the class is boring and I might start to fall asleep.

Maroo Blogpost Prompt #2

2. In a good story, the main character changes or evolves as the novel progresses.
In Maroo of the Winter Caves, how does Maroo change? Be sure to use examples from the book to support your ideas.

The changes that develop in Maroo are that she gains courage and she gains a sense of leadership. A reason I think she had to gain courage is that she didn't have to worry because there were 2 hunters; Areg and Vorka who could protect them. Because there were two men that could protect the family, Maroo didn't need much courage. But when Areg dies and Vorka breaks his arm, there is one less hunter and the other is sort of useless so now Maroo is going to need some courage. In the book Old Mother says "Now listen; I am an old woman an my legs are stiff; Vorka is injured, and your mother has the baby and Nimai; all this would delay us. Only two people are young and strong enough to cross the mountain: you and Otak." Maroo will have to gain courage because she and Otak; or even Maroo alone (if Otak dies/goes missing) will have to face spirits, animals, harsh weather, avalanches, and maybe even death itself to cross the mountain.

Here is another reason how Maroo gained courage. Maroo and Otak have to cross the mountain alone and Maroo will have to protect herself and Otak from many things. For example; spirits, animals, harsh weather and avalanches. An example of facing animals in the book is when the mountain lion is standing in her path, she  shows courage by deciding to fight/scare the lion."There on the path in front of her, outlined in silver, with every hair, every whisker, glittering, was the lion." "Pitch and fire united. The torch blazed, crackling and spitting, a red intruder in the silver night.
The lion snarled and spat. It backed away. Maroo advanced, holding the torch in front of her. She bared her teeth at the lion, but her hands shook with fear." This is an example of Maroo showing lots of courage, if you think about it, Maroo had enough courage to sot of fight a mountain lion. Ask yourself, would I have enough courage to do that? And that will tell you how courageous Maroo really is.

Here is one reason how Maroo gained a sense of leadership. Well, the most obvious reason is that she was put in charge of the journey across the mountain. Old Mother said in the book; "I have chosen Maroo as leader because she is the elder and also because I can trust her to be sensible  and cautious,". Maroo would be more sensible because she knows more than Otak, she has had more experience, and because she knows better than Otak does. Being in charge and being nominated leader of the journey gave Maroo a chance to develope and use her leadership skills. This expirience gave Maroo a sense of leadership. Those are the reasons and examples of Maroo gaining courage and a sense of leadership.

Chapters 9-12 Prompt #1

1. "By the time they reached the plain, the weather changed. The days were gray and darkness came early. Once a flurry of snowflakes reminded them of the danger they were in. It was as if winter were a giant striding behind them, his shadow already looming". p69

The author Anne Turnbull compares winter to a giant. Describe the danger and hardships that winter poses for the tribe.
There are many dangers and hardships that Areg's group will have to face.  One of the hardships is that it will be harder to obtain food. In the winter lots of animals are gone. For example some animals (well a lot of animals) hibernate, some like birds fly south and some even build shelters to keep away from predators or weather for the winter, so it will be hard to obtain food. That is the first hardship.

Here is the second reason. It will be harder to travel with the weather. It will be hard to travel in the weather because there are blizzards and harsh weather like that and they could go blind in a blizzard and it would be very hard to know where you are going in a blizzard. Because of blizzards they have to build a snow house to stay in, but blizzards can go on for a long period of time so they will waste a lot of time during a blizzard. That is the second important hardship they will have to face.

This is the third challenge. It is easy to get sick in the winter. Another hardship is that it is easy to  get sick and that won't be good because it will take up lots of their time to get to the meeting place. It will take up time because if you're really sick it will take a long time to recover and you won't be able to travel so they will be stuck in one place for a long time with a sick person. Plus I don't think they had very many kinds of medicine so it might even get worse and then they would have a serious problem. That is the third hardship.

This is the last main reason. It would take longer to travel to the meeting place. Here are some example or how it could take longer to travel to the meeting place; if someone gets sick because they won't be able to travel so the others will have to wait, harsh weather because if the weather is bad enough they will have to build shelter and wait  until the bad weather is over,  and if they can't find food because if they can't get food they won't have any energy. Those are the main dangers and hardships that Areg's tribe would have to face.
